On the occasion of the 63rd birthday of SPB Yang di-Pertuan Agong, a family day picnic for all Malaysians was organized by the Embassy of Malaysia on Saturday, 3 June 2006 from 3.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. The event was held at the Stadium of La Muette, near the Embassy.
About 180 people, comprising of the staff of the Embassy, officials from other Malaysian agencies in France, fellow Malaysians and their families, participated in this outdoor event. Some Malaysian students studying in and around Paris also attended the function. Some Malaysians even brought along their local friends to join in the gathering to give them a feel of the unique cultural experience of Malaysia.
The family day commenced with a simple ceremony of the singing of the National Anthem, “Negara Ku”. All Malaysians and their guests proudly sang the national anthem aloud facing the Jalur Gemilang, which was flown in the Stadium. Two patriotic songs, namely “Jalur Gemilang” and “Kerana Mu Malaysia” were also sung. H.E. Dato’ Hamidah Mohd Yusoff then officiated the occasion by cutting a ”durian flavoured” birthday cake with “Daulat Tuanku” written on it.
As part of the celebration, various outdoor sports activities for children and adults were planned for the day. There were games for children of all ages such as “Balloon Bursting”, “Bonbon Collector”, “I wonder where my shoes are!”, “I need a seat in the Parliament” and “Let’s go fishing”. The children also demonstrated their creativity in the colouring and drawing competition organized by the Malaysian Association in France (MAF). The younger ones coloured the drawings of cartoons. The older children inspired by the theme “My Beautiful Malaysia” showed their imagination and capability to produce beautiful drawings of “The Twin Towers” and other sceneries of Malaysia.
As for the adults, it was a day of laughter and fun as husbands and wives, parents and siblings or even between friends joined in the games conducted for them. The games organized were “Water Balloon Throw”, “Three legged Race with Egg in the Spoon”, “Blind Man’s Race” and “Balloon Race”.
Packets of Nasi Lemak and drinks were distributed tothe joy of everyone present. Many had also brought along other dishes and desserts to supplement the dinner packet.
Apart from the objective of the event to commemorate the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s 63rd birthday celebration, the gathering was also able to successfully promote unity, camaraderie and friendship among Malaysians in France. Everyone indeed enjoyed the outdoor activity. The family day was a success as a result of the “semangat bergotong royong” displayed by everyone. It has also brought fellowship and the spirit of goodwill amongst the Malaysian community in France.
