National Day Celebration in Paris Thursday, 21st September 2006

On the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the Merdeka Day celebration, a National Day Reception was held at the Concorde La Fayette Hotel in Paris on Thursday, 21st September 2006. 

H.E. Ambassador Dato’ S. Thanarajasingam and his spouse, Datin Dr. Saradha Iyer were on hand to receive the 200 guests, among whom were, Ambassadors and diplomat corps, senior French government officials, captains of industry, the French media and the Malaysian community in Paris. The reception provided an opportunity for many of the guests to meet and make acquaintance with H.E. Dato’ S. Thanarajasingam, the new Ambassador of Malaysia to France.

Joining forces to make the reception livelier, Mr. Micheal Anthony, a renowned Malaysian sculptor in France brought along his masterpieces to display to the guests. His bronze sculptures were specially dedicated to the Merdeka Day celebration. Some of the sculptures exhibited entitled “Bangsa Bersatu”,Bersatu Hati”, “Jiwa Bersatu” to reflect the unity and harmony of the Malaysian people. Many of the guests were impressed with his talent and art works.

The Malaysian sculptor currently lives and works in Nice, France. He studied sculpture and painting at the prestigious Scuola Institute of Applied Arts and Industry in Milan, Italy. He has also participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. Among them were the 2006 International Exhibition in Kobe, Japan; the Grand Salon International of Arts in Nice; the Grand Marché d’Art Contemporain in Valbonne, France and the Amicie Dei Artiste in Milan, Italy.  Mr. Micheal Anthony has won many awards such as the “Prestige de l’Art” & “Prestige de l’ Europe” sculpture award from the Nice Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 2005 and the 3rd Prize award from the Trinity Arts and Sculpture exhibition in 2006.     

A corner adorned with Malaysian handicrafts, arts and the various ethnic costumes was also set-up at the National Day reception. It provided the guests an opportunity to have a glimpse of Malaysia’s rich culture and heritage. Malaysian delicacies such as “curry puffs”, “cucur badak” and other Malaysian sweets such as “kuih ketayap” and “kuih lapis” were also served. Many of the guests enjoyed the Malaysian savouries.

In line with the Embassy’s effort to promote Malaysia among the French,  brochures and promotional materials on tourism, investment and trade opportunities in Malaysia were also on display and given away to the guests.
